Packages and receptacles with tactile indications are becoming popular in
Japan. This appears desirable for the persons with visual impairment.
However, many of these indications were inconsistent and/or inconvenient in
terms of contents, position and form. Accordingly, 2 types of surveys were
conducted to clarify the present situations and the problems of these
indications. In the first survey, comments or opinions of 25 persons with
visual impairment were heard after they have examined several daily
commodities with various tactile indications. In the second survey,
questionnaire was sent to 351 persons with visual impairment. The questions
were prepared based on the results of the first survey: Some results were:
(1) Braille, raised short lines, semi-lunar notch were preferable type of
tactile indications (2) Small number of commodities among whole
merchandise were important problems (3) Tactile indications showing brand
name was more useful than those showing vague name of the contents.
The results of these surveys were utilized for standardization of the tactile
indications of packaging and receptacles.
