This study attempts to clarify what images are evoked by various
tactile feeling, which intends to be applied to human interfaces.
A lot of visual and auditory interfaces are designed under consideration
of what images the features give to us. On the other hand, so far the
other sensory interfaces have been rare, except for the ones for some
special users. Particularly, the sense of touch has been not sufficiently
paid attention to, although we usually use control interfaces with hands.
Thus, in order to realize control interfaces that can give appropriate
tactile images, in this study we clarify what the elements of tactile
feeling are, and what images are evoked by them, through the experiments.
The result of the first experiment shows that tactile feeling can be
principally explained by warmth and coarseness. And the result of the
second experiment revealed the relation between tactile feeling and images
given to us. Knowledge from this study will be able to contribute to design
control interfaces that we can use intuitively. And such control interfaces
with appropriate tactile feeing are expected to naturally support human
cognitive processes.
