The purpose of this research is to propose the method of presenting visual
texture information by haptic texture information using visual-haptic
modality transformation. On preliminary findings which we had done, it was
very difficult to the understand texture of stuffs such as clothes, sofa,
or plushie for babies on VDT environment. In this study, 3 basic experiments
were conducted: 1) Evaluation of gsmoothnessh, 2) Measurement of
psychological strength ofgsmoothnessh, and 3) Measurement of Physical
value ofgsmoothnesshusinggTangible mouseh. As for the results, the method
of visual-haptic modality transformation using gTangible mousehwas found.
Finally, the system of presenting visual texture information by visual-haptic
modality transformation usinggTangible mouseh was developed, and
assessment experiments were conducted. As for the results of assessment-
experiments, availability was found on the situation of presenting the fabrics
which were difficult to understand the feel of smoothness.
